There are 2 main types of Large Format Digital Textile Printers:

Dye sublimation transfer

Process:

Digital dye sublimation transfer printers are designed to print a design onto specially coated sublimation transfer paper.
This printed paper is then transferred onto a form of heat press, along with the chosen polyester textile/media to be printed.
The printed dye sublimation paper is then heat-pressed together with the polyester material.
Through the heat & pressure, the “dye-stuff” in the ink instantaneously transforms into a gas & permeates the polyester (“sublimates”).
After the process, the paper is removed & the media is cooled, leaving a full colour, permanent design onto the media, without changing the touch-feel or material characteristics.

Direct to textile

Process:

Direct to textile printers are designed to print directly onto textile (or garments) using specialised inkjet technology.
Key requirements are: specially engineered feeding system, specially coated textile, specially engineered ink.
Benefits are speed, convenience, and most of all – some fabrics can be printed almost fully double-sided colour.
It is now possible to print sublimation, pigment, reactive & acid inks directly to textiles….
